Ghanaian female creatives changing the world one track at a time.

By

What a time to be alive! Welcome to TMSlive. It’s Midweek already (Wednesdaaaaaaay!) and on a day like this, my ovaries get excited because I get to celebrate female artists who are making a change in the world, with their voice( #WCWplaylist). Today, I’ll be introducing to you the first set of my favorite female creatives from my home country, Ghana. But before we roll our sleeves to get started, I want to shoutout my beautiful cousin, Nana Ama Asantewaa. I just received the news about the birth of her new born baby( it’s a booooooy and he was born on Tuesday! My day! I’ll drink to that!) and I’m so excited to celebrate the newest member of the family. Motherhood must be a wonderful feeling and talking about mothers, I asked my mum( a huge music fan) quite a while ago, “Ma, how would you describe good music?” She simply answered, “Good music is one that touches your soul and if it doesn’t touch your soul then it’s not good music”.Periodt!!

The creative juices of the following artists (in no particular order) have touched my soul one way or the other and I’d love to share their works and the little I know about them with you. Let’s dig in.

1. Renner

Mercy Nana Efua Renner aka Edinabaayewa is a multitalented dancehall and reggae artist who hails from Edina in the central region of Ghana. She’s gone viral on social media with two of her music covers (‘Ayoo’ and ‘Kill them with prayers’ ) which are classics by the dancehall King, Shatta Wale. The Award winning dancehall Queen is recognised for her great vocals and stage performances in Ghana and beyond and endorsements from top Ghanaian bloggers and celebrities, including Shatta Wale and television goddess, Nana Ama McBrown. Few days ago, Renner went nuts as she was followed by Grammy nominated International musician and activist, Rocky Dawuni on Twitter( Yaaaayy!). Her newest single, ‘Save Us’, connected to the global pandemic, has been making waves on our local radio and tv stations , social media and is currently making waves internationally since its release earlier this year. Kindly visit the link below to watch the video and see what she’s up to on her Socials.

2. Verony

Vodafone Icons 2018 first runner up, Verony Swatson, an Afro-soul singer and songwriter, whose vocals could make you drool in the corner of your mouth is also one of the Ghanaian female musicians on my list. This music genius is one that gets chills running down your spine as you feel their vocals seep through your soul. She has performed in the presence of his excellency, Nana Akuffo Addo and on other huge platforms in Ghana. Verony caught my attention with a music cover she did with the ‘Game of thrones’ opening soundtrack and as my mind was blown by that piece, I had to reach out to her. Few days later, we had a wonderful interview session on my radio show, which attracted many calls and texts from the metro. (This lady Ihn voice dierrr…charley!) Whatever I’ll say about her voice now will be an understatement. She released her debut Ep dubbed ‘Sexxx’ in 2019 and trust me, all the tunes on the Ep are fiiire! Track 3, ‘Not tonight’ is one of my personal favourites. Please find the link below to listen to this masterpiece.

3. S3kyerewaa

It is said that the best comes from the West! S3kyerewaa, a sensational alternative artist hailing from Takoradi, the western region of Ghana is known for her hit Single, “Someday” and her vocals on the ‘I Dey for you’ record (The Gamble’ album) by M.anifest, the god MC. She was also part of the residency artists who created beautiful sounds and performances at the Asabaako festival earlier this year and recently got featured on a project by Mōnki Bznzz, a music producer from Nigeria, which you must listen to it like now! Track title: ‘The way you do’. Personally, I think she delivered so well on the beat! Let me know what you think about this new joint.

You can also watch the video of her hit single, ‘Someday’ directed by Asajo Lawal.

The passion and energy these young female artists instil in their art is just beautiful and inspiring and they deserve to be supported along every step of the way. How can you support, you ask? Stream and buy their music, listen and share their works, attend their shows and cheer them on and that, my dear friend, is how you can support them.

Aaaand it’s a Wrap( like chicken wrap. Yum!) This post is brought to you by, TMSlive.art.blog . Let me know what you think about their music in the comment session below. You can also make submissions of ‘good music’ via my email so that I can check them out. Take care. Love and Light to you.
